The Route, version 3, subject to change

Well we spent some more time looking at the route the other day. The original plan was to stop at the big airshow in Oshkosh, WI before going to SD. The second version of the route was to leave earlier and go to SD first and then back track to Oshkosh.

We are back to the first version with a little modification. The way it looks now, we will head to Bar Harbor, ME first, then to Rangeley, ME (where Pete and Peggy had their honeymoon). From Maine we will go to Ithaca, NY (where Pete went to college).

After a day or two in Ithaca, we will fly west along the south side of Lake Erie, passing Erie and Cleveland. At the west end of the lake (Toledo), we will turn right (North) and head up the MI peninsula. At the top of the peninsula, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet. We'll pass over that short stretch of water at the Mackinac Bridge. That bridge is a toll road but I think we'll skip the toll. Then we will fly south along the west side of Lake Michigan to Oshkosh.

We will not actually fly to the Oshkosh airport because it will be VERY busy there. We'll fly to a nearby airport and drive in from there.

After a few days at Oshkosh (www.airventure.org) we'll continue west to Hot Springs, SD. Pete's old school buddy (Jolly) lives out there so we'll be there for a few days.

Next should be a stop in Denver so we can drive up to Breckenridge to see some of Dan's friends (and to get the best pizza anywhere). From Colorado we will head southeast towards New Orleans. Does anyone know of any interesting places along that part of the trip?

Another friend of Pete's (Dick B.) lives in Gulf Shores, AL. Dick says he lives a mile away from an airport, so we'll stop there. After oysters at Felix's Oyster Bar in New Orleans, we'll fly down Florida to Key West, with a stop near Orlando to see Dan's family.

After leaving Florida, Hilton Head, SC will be the next stop then over to Knoxville to visit Pete's sister in law, Garnet. Then up the west side of the Appalachian Mountains to Williamsport, PA. From there the next stop will be HOME!

Here is photo of a US map with push pins at the planned stop. Can you guess who did that? You get a 50/50 shot.

So that is the route as it looks today.

  1. Hmmm...pushpins on a map? That seems like classic Pete Hallock to me!

  2. Nice map. So it looks like from where you'll be in Texas,it's only a short hop over to Honolulu. Why not?
